Fun with Phonics is a phonemic awareness program that was specifically designed to prepare your child for reading. Researchers at The National Institute of Children’s Health (NICHD) have determined that phonemic awareness is one of the strongest predictors in reading success. In fact, lack of phonemic awareness is the root cause of reading failure. Phonemes are the smallest units of speech and therefore Fun with Phonics emphasizes consonant and vowel sounds.

Fun with Phonics is an exciting, interactive, multisensory learning experience based on the Orton-Gillingham method and other phonics-based reading programs. While exploring language through visual, kinesthetic and auditory pathways, your child will develop his or her own learning style. Listening skills and learning to follow directions, as well as interacting with others, will be emphasized in a caring, compassionate, and safe environment. Each 2.5 hour session with ten or fewer students will include oral demonstration and practice, written expression, a snack, reading exploration, and one-on-one time with the teacher. There will be frequent individual evaluations to report your child’s personal progress.

Orton-Gillingham: a multisensory, systematic, structured method of instruction

Multisensory: approaches to learning that include auditory, visual, tactile and kinesthetic activities

Auditory: (hear) reading aloud, recordings, listening

Visual: (see) drawings, photographs, charts, text

Tactile: (touch) sandpaper, shaving cream, pudding writing, clay

Kinesthetic: (movement) dance, large puzzles, physical construction, rhythm

Phoneme: the smallest unit of speech

Phonemic awareness: blending sounds, rhyming, substituting sounds, adding and taking away sounds, and identifying sounds
